 Introduction to CRAFT Defensive Tactics

Benefits of CRAFT Defensive Tactics Program

Officers needlessly succumb to human-performance factors because of archaic force-training methodology.

C.R.A.F.T. is a comprehensive training-program incorporating scientific principles of cognitive psychology, emotional awareness and self-management. Officers learn to provide a measured and disciplined response in the toxic environment of human conflict.

Because gun and badge and the mere presence of the uniform provide a subtle coercion, use-of-force is a continuous thread woven into every interaction.

C.R.A.F.T.-Defensive Tactics System teaches officers to align themselves with organizational values and, through value-based decision making, officers balance authority with a sense of duty and service.

Conventional force training requires officers, while under stress and time-compression, to filter through tiers of complex legal precedent, policy, procedures, case law and some form of a force-continuum in order to find their respective position within a string of force options.

C.R.A.F.T. embraces the objective reasonableness standard and provides a medium with which to impart a common sense approach to officer managed-jeopardy and the judicious use of force.

Students who successfully complete the instructor certification course are certified to teach end-user/officers within their own department/organization.

* C.R.A.F.T. Instructors may obtain Advanced Certification or Master Instructor Certification in lieu of recertification.

C.R.A.F.T. –Instructor Certification

The 40-hour Reasonable Use-of-Force Instructor Certification-Program is designed to provide instructor level-certification for use-of-force techniques and legal considerations. Adult learning principles and coaching techniques are emphasized so they may teach and certify others in basic defensive tactics and the reasonable use of force.

  • Day One: Reasonable Force: civil/criminal considerations, lawful vs. reasonable, (case studies), reasonable force vs. force-continuum, documentation and analysis of force events
  • Day Two: Cuffing/Control Procedures, Escort Techniques (single officer/multiple officer)
  • Day Three: Active Defense Techniques
  • Day Four: Weapon Retention and Ground Defense-Techniques
  • Day Five: Scenario-based exercises

Equipment needed: Casual or athletic clothing, mouthpiece, groin protector, footwear.

Materials provided: Instructor-manual.

Value and Results

  • Officers learn to place suspects under arrest in a safe and constitutional manner, thereby reducing instances of the use of force and reducing unnecessary physical confrontations.

  • Officers learn to control suspects without overdependence upon tools such as OC, Asp, Taser and even their handgun. Intermediate control tools are effec.ve at reducing injuries to both suspects and officers. However, these tools are not always readily available, may malfunction and can even be used against the officer.

  • This course is designed to teach officers to recognize their personal limitations. Officers learn to avoid the common errors in judgment.

  • This course teaches an officer to correctly recognize and identify the severity of an attack and respond to the attack with the appropriate level of force. This course will enhance the officer’s ability to win a confrontation when only bare hands are available or practical.

C.R.A.F.T. / Defensive Tactics System

  • The Sponsoring Agency will receive an Instructor-Manual for each attendee that successfully fulfills the requirements of the course.
  • Instructor-Manuals include course curriculum and lesson plans that are appropriate for end-user instruction.
  • So as to ensure participant-safety, consistent with highest and best practices, the manual includes a safety plan to be implemented with each course of instruction.
  • Lesson plans may be taught in a comprehensive and cohesive manner in a forty-hour course: however the course is formatted in eight-hour sessions (nine-hour days) and can be implemented in a sequential manner for like results.
  • In addition, components of the course can be broken down and taught in shorter increments such as squad room training.

*The Instructor-Manuals are copyright-protected and become the responsibility of and are retained by the sponsoring agency for employee use in accordance with the training received.
